'Downwell Run' is a very short, 2D platformer made for the 2024 Beginner's Jam (and my first ever jam) using Godot. You play as a fashionable mouse whose dear plush animal was lost in a well.

Mr. Ratts' teddy fell  into the well. Now he must venture into its depths to retrieve it - avoiding all the perils that await him.

Note: Remember to unmute browser when starting the game; would also recommend Chrome as it loads much faster*. IT TAKES A BIT TO LOAD BUT IT WORKS (about a minute)

CONTROLS:

  • Arrows or W, A, S, D to move
  • Space to Jump (double it for double-jump!)
  • E to interact

Beware of the frogs and free-falls! If you stay in the air too long, you might have to start from scratch.

Art, design and code are all self-made.

(both with free-use licenses)

* considerably faster loading in Chrome compared to Firefox or Safari. After loading works fine in all browsers.

Good job on the game but:

  • I just feel like the movement could use a bit more of acceleration and friction.
  • Also there was no air resistance but I understand that this might be intentional given the nature of the game (always falling down and need to move quickly while falling).
  • While you're falling down you shouldn't be able to double jump (you should have just the second jump meaning that you lose the first jump even if you haven't used it).
  • I found a chest that animates when I come near it and had what seems to be gold inside it, can I interact with it?

Other than that the game is good.

Hi! Thank you for the feedback, it is most welcomed.

First of all re-chest, when you come near it, if you've taken damage, you get back one heart. Inside the chest is a piece of cheese. I understand now that I should have made the interaction more obvious. The fall feeling very quick is also intentional!

The code, art and design were all developed in a week so I didn't have a lot of time for refinement – I'll keep your suggestions in mind.

Good luck with your next projects!

Thank you!!
